“The Gloucester Schooner Festival is an event put on by Maritime Gloucester and has become a community wide celebration of the age of sail in Gloucester Harbor. We are so very proud of EHSSM’s Operation Manager Capt. Katherine Dench “KD” who won the George Nichols Trophy and Amanda Madeira “Woman at the Wheel Award” at the ceremony that rounded out the events of Gloucester Schooner Festival 2021.

Tales from the archive/library. As we work through the collection of books in the Schoolhouse with an eye towards making it an actual library, some really interesting material appears. The latest treasure we’ve found is the report The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States published in 8 volumes in the 1880s by the U.S. Fish Commission. The Fish Commission was established in 1871 to investigate the fishing industry (no surprise.) It went through a couple of iterations and eventually wound up as part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1940. -EHSSM Researcher, Charles Seavey Ph.D.

The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States, are oversize volumes, including a volume of plates (illustrations) the title page of which you see here. Ignore the property stamp, the Friary discarded the volume long ago, and we’ve owned it for a long, long, time. |

The plates are a fascinating look at the fishing industry of nearly 140 years ago. Here are two examples: The schooner Marion you see here was built in Essex in 1834 (!), and was sold to Sedgwick, Maine, in 1889. We don’t know either her designer, or builder, but think she must have been well built to have such a long career. We do know that Mystic was built by Willard A. Burnham in 1879, although again we don’t know the designer. We also don’t know her fate, or how long her career may have been. On the other hand, the dog seems very calm about all the activity: |
