ADA Access and Transition Plan

Acknowledgment of Physical Limitations:

At EHSSM, we recognize the unique physical characteristics of our historic site, including limitations that currently pose challenges to accessibility. We are committed to enhancing our facility's accessibility and in the interim, provide additional support such as vehicle access for mobility-impaired individuals to navigate the shipyard more comfortably. This plan outlines our current and future efforts to ensure all visitors can enjoy the rich maritime heritage and shipbuilding culture of Essex.

Current Accessibility Features:

- ADA-designated parking space offers convenient access to the museum.

- Accessible ramp at the main entrance.

- Accessible restroom facilities.

- Signage with large text for low-vision visitors.

- Docents trained to offer verbal tours for vision-impaired visitors.

Accommodations on Request:

- 30 days notice is required for special accommodations such as individualized interpretation to ensure we can meet your needs.

- Visitors needing additional access support through the shipyard can request vehicle assistance.

Transition Plan:

We are actively planning improvements to overcome our sites physical barriers. Our approach includes:

- Conducting a comprehensive accessibility self audit.

- Developing and implementing a site plan maximizing physical asset utilization for better access.

- Upgrading surfaces and pathways in the shipyard for better wheelchair navigation.

- Ensuring new exhibits and programs are accessible, including alternative interpretation formats.

- Continually training staff and docents on accessibility best practices.

Grievance Policy:

EHSSM is dedicated to providing an inclusive and accessible experience for all visitors. If you encounter any access barriers or have concerns about our facilities or services, please contact Natasha Taylor at Office@essexshipbuilding.org.
